Drinking Water Filtration Systems: How Size and Design Guides Your Selection

Drinking water purifiers for your home come in several different styles. Each style comes with strenths and weaknesses, so deciding on a design to fit your house, your desires, and your preferred location is a crutial stage in the buying process.

Water Filters for Your Refrigerator

Refrigerator water filters are made to attach to the back of the fridge and provide filtration for drinking water or ice from your fridge.

A water filter for your refrigerator protects you from pollution that makes it into a bottled drink via your built in ice maker. Water filters made for the refrigerator are comparable to water filters designed for an ice maker, the only difference is the appliance to which they are attached. If you do not cook very often, purifying the ice and the water that comes from your refrigerator could be all you need.

Water Coolers

Water coolers with filters aren't only used in offices. Most mothers are working on their kids to get them drinking more water and fewer cokes. Moms also love it when the children can get refills while avoiding a trip to the refrigerator.

A quality filtered water cooler gives cold and hot water as you need it, so it gets used in all seasons. And remember, you get great tasting water with no back breaking bottles to carry around.

Pitchers that Filter Your Water

Water filtration pitchers send water through a filter media by force of gravity. Water filters of this design don't provide the cleanest water since they cannot include dense filter cartridges, such as ceramic media, since only gravity force is used to push the water through. These systems are very slow to produce filtered drinking water and don't allow for a wide selection of filter media.

Portable Water Filters

For people that are going places, portable water filtration systems are a great way to always have filtered water. These range in design from sports bottles with a built in water filter to countertop water filters.

Counter Top Water Filters

Water filters that sit on your counter top are simple to install, making them a great filter for people that live in apartments or whenever a temporary installation is needed. Additionally, you won't have to drill a hole in your kitchen sink or counter to install a counter top water filter.

The smallest countertop water filters takes up no more counter space than a small water pitcher. A counter top water filter is the best filter to purchase when all the space under your counter is already taken.

Water Filters Designed for Installation Under the Sink

A water filter under your kitchen sink leaves your countertop space open and makes for a great looking installation. Since water filters that install under the sink are placed out of the way, they are typically larger, and therefore more likely to produce the best available water filtration. A two canister water filter with four stages is a top notch filter, that uses very little space under your sink.

This water filter design is often called an under the counter water filter system, since there is no requirement to install them directly under a sink.

Reverse Osmosis

A reverse osmosis purification system takes quite a bit of time to purify water, so you must have a storage tank to hold purified water for periods of heavy usage. If there's not enough space under your counter a system that uses reverse osmosis is not the best choice. Another point to remember is reverse osmosis water treatment is no longer the best way to filter your water.

Water Filters Attached to the Kitchen Faucet

Faucet mounted water filters attach directly to the end of your kitchen faucet and have a valve to allow the filter to be switched off and on. Faucet mounted filters don't produce the best water, because they only contain a small water filter cartridge, usually constrained to granular activated carbon, which has limited effectiveness.

Most often, a counter top water filter which uses carbon block filtration gives better tasting water than a faucet mounted filter.

Even though you have all these choices, you should be able to easily choose a style of a water filter system that's the best fit for your kitchen. A big part of your selection is dependent on the room available installed in your kitchen and whether you need water for cookin or for drinking.
